Standard Tuition Rate

Your lessons are delivered by a DVSA-registered instructor or an advanced trainee driving instructor, all trained to our local curriculum.

Midweek daytime (before 5:30pm): £40/hr pay-as-you-go, or £38/hr when you block-book 20 hours.

Evening (After 5:30 PM): £42 / hr

Weekend (Saturday & Sunday): £45 / hr

Lessons delivered by a master-level coach (Fleet or RoSPA certified) specialising in intensive prep and advanced vehicle control.

My instructor John Stainton was very easy to understand and made his points clear when teaching me. Towards the end of my training. We would be practicing mock test routes around bury/ramsbottom. I got in contact with John Stainton in September 2025 through a recommendation, and I'm really glad I did. I was booked in for a lesson the following week, and out on the main road within the first two lessons which genuinely surprised me, but it set the tone for how quickly we would and could progress. Because I was also working, flexibility mattered, and John was great about it. We built a schedule that fitted around my job (sorry for sleeping through a few of our lessons, John!) Working through the modules, John was consistently patient. I have a tendency to get quite worked up when I make a mistake, but he never made a big deal of it he'd just talk me through it calmly and give clear guidance until I had it. We drove all over Ramsbottom, Bury and Heywood so I'd get proper coverage of the kind of roads and situations to expect on test day. Towards the end, he gave me a say in what the lessons were and which areas I wanted more practice on. John's knowledge of the roads, route changes and local layout is great and it rubbed off. By the end of our time together I was spotting things and pointing them out before he could. I was nervous going into the test even though we'd covered everything, but I put what I'd learnt into practice and it paid off. I passed 10th August 2026 with 2 minors: First time My advice for anyone taking their test would be to stay calm, it’s easy to make a mistake when you’re thinking and taking in a lot of information. If you do make a mistake, with proper planning you have time to correct it. Left is best! Highly recommend John to anyone learning in the Bury area.

Bury as a test-centre town, not a Bolton suburb

Bury is a market town with its own DVSA practical test centre on Smith Street. It is not a satellite of Weston Street. Learners who live in Bury, or who are collected from BL8, BL9 or BL0, should expect lesson planning that points at Smith Street’s urban approaches: Moorgate, Peel Way, Bell Lane, and the mix of town-centre buses, multi-lane work and residential starts that sit around that site. Bolton pages on this website are for Bolton. This page is for Bury.

The town’s driving character is a compressed mix: tight historic streets around the market, faster dual-carriageway and bypass sections, and industrial or retail corridors with heavy commercial traffic. A syllabus that only uses one of those three will leave a predictable gap. Independent driving in Bury often means following signs or a sat-nav through that mix without stalling the plan when a bus stops or a lane marking disappears. The DVSA does not publish the exact test route. Practising the public roads around Smith Street is still the honest way to prepare.

Harwood Driving School covers Bury with door-to-door pick-up. The school itself is based in Harwood, Bolton, BL2. That fact belongs in the about and Dan Ison pages. It does not turn a Bury learner into a Bolton learner. If your test is booked at Smith Street, your last few lessons should be spent on Bury roads, not on a BL2 loop that happens to be near the office.

Smith Street versus Weston Street

Smith Street is the default practical centre for this hub. Weston Street is Bolton’s centre. Some pupils who live on the borough boundary will have a genuine choice; most will not. We will not pretend the two sites share a route. We will teach the one you are booked for, using the named roads around it. Pass Plus, motorway and refresher products are separate from that test-prep block.

Village spokes from this hub include Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Whitefield and Prestwich. Each has its own page because the Metrolink, the Irwell valley gradients, and the A56 are not the same lesson. Use the spoke that matches where you live. Instructional standard without copying the person page

Instructors teaching Bury learners work to the same school standard. Dan Ison’s ORDIT Grade A 51/51 (21 December 2021) is how that standard is inspected for instructor training. It is not a claim that every Bury hour is personally taught by Dan. Book the instructor named on your profile. Verify documents on the credentials page. Read who Dan is on /dan-ison. Those three jobs stay on three URLs.

Manual and automatic lessons are both offered in Bury. Pricing is on the learner page. Nervous learners can start on quieter BL8/BL9 residential streets before adding town-centre density. That pacing is ordinary coaching, not a different syllabus.

Town centre, then Smith Street, then the spokes

A Bury-first month should include at least one hour that never leaves the town-centre bus and pedestrian mix, and at least one hour that only does Smith Street approaches. Splitting those jobs stops the pupil treating the test-centre gates as the whole of Bury. Later, if they live in Radcliffe or Ramsbottom, move the pick-up to that spoke rather than collecting in Bury and pretending the spoke does not exist.

Market days and school peaks change gap size on Moorgate and Bell Lane. If the test is booked on a weekday morning, some lessons should share that density. An empty Sunday car park is a poor only diet. That is local diary advice, not a route leak.
